Ashvale Chronicle

★★★★★ 4.6 Editor rating

Ashvale Chronicle drops you into a rain-soaked port town and hands you a mismatched crew of four. The story leans dark without being grim for its own sake, and the writing is sharper than most mobile RPGs bother with. I found myself reading the codex entries, which almost never happens.

Combat is turn-based and positional. Where you stand matters, elemental weaknesses matter, and a lazy team wipe usually means I skipped reading a skill description. The good news is that grinding is optional — smart party composition carries you further than raw levels, and boss fights felt like puzzles rather than stat checks.

The one drawback is a fiddly inventory screen that clearly started life on a bigger display. Once you learn to ignore the auto-sort button and manage gear yourself, it's fine. Everything else here is a step above the crowd.
